Shalom is a facility in a lower income area in Guatemala City. The owner of Shalom created this facility to give people with Dementia and other mental illness somewhere to live and to be taken care of. Most of these people do not have family to care for them, or in some cases were homeless and abandoned. Shalom does not receive support from the government, and relies on any money the patients can bring in. The owner and her staff do the best possible work they can to make these patients comfortable. Since there is a major lack of funding, there are only a few caretakers for many patients so they have to be tied down to their chairs so they can keep track of them. This facility is the only hope for these patients. ERMITA is working to help the living and care standards of this facility, but it is incredibly difficult with very few resources.
